URSULINE DROPS A PAIR TO OPEN THE SEASON AT THE FALCON FEST
Fairmont, W.Va. – (courtesy of @UrsulineArrows) The Ursuline volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the season on Friday, falling in three sets to West Liberty University and then four sets to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown on the opening day of the Falcon Fest, hosted by Fairmont State University.
The Arrows fell to the Hilltoppers 25-20, 25-22 and 25-17. Pitt-Johnstown bested Ursuline by scores of 25-14 and 25-19 before the Arrows won a thrilling third set by a score of 27-25. The Lady Cats rebounded with a 25-14 victory in the fourth set to clinch the match.
In the first match of the day, junior Alex Leister led Ursuline with seven kills while classmate Maureen Kelly chipped in six and sophomore Brittany Kempf added four to combine for 17 of the Arrows 24 kills, 18 of which came on an assist from sophomore Kelley Plas.
Defensively, both Leister and sophomore Kelly Stenger scooped out a match-high 17 digs.
URBANA DROPS TWO MATCHES AT THE FAIRMONT STATE FALCON FEST
Fairmont, W.Va. - (courtesy of @UUsports) The Urbana volleyball program opened it season along side fellow G-MAC Ursuline College, taking part in the Fairmont State University Falcon Fest Invitational. Like UC, the Blue Knights dropped both of its first two matches.
Urbana dropped the first match of the Invitational in three games to host Fairmont State. In the second match, UU managed to win a game, but fell in four games
TREVECCA TOPS COVENANT IN SCOTT JONES OPENER
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - (courtesy of @TNUsports) The Trevecca volleyball team opened their 2012 season with a 3-0 win over Covenant College, 25-13, 25-22, 25-19. The match served as the opener of the 2012 Scott Jones Classic @ Trevecca.
Trevecca dominated the opening set 25-13 with a .286 attack percentage. In the second set, the Trojans won a tight game, 25-22, before closing the match in the third and final set. Trevecca led 18-17 in the final set, then rolled to the finish with a 7-2 spurt.
Kirsten Taylor and Kristen Johnson led the team with nine kills apiece. Persephonie Devereaux added seven. Caroline Gay, a freshman from Murfreesboro, had 15 assists in her collegiate debute. Johnson added nine assists and seven digs for an all-around performance, while Taylor and Loren Bennett led the team with nine digs.
LIGHTING STRIKES TWICE FOR CEDARVILLE
INDIANA, Pa. - (courtesy of @CUYellowJackets) Cedarville made quite an impression in its first two NCAA Division II volleyball matches. The Lady Jackets rallied from back-to-back two games to none deficits to stun both Le Moyne and Michigan Tech at the Indiana (Pa.) Invitational.
CU defeated Le Moyne, 22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-11. They returned later in the evening for a repeat performance, outlasting Michigan Tech, 18-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-13.
In the first match, Stephanie Rogers and Lori Inkrott put away 13 kills apiece, while Amanda Bell and Tori Thompson added 10 each. Hanna Wagner chipped in nine kills.
Maddie Anderson totaled 27 assists with three service aces and Erica Bartholomew had 24 assists. Heather Kirkpatrick piled up 34 assists and Kara Yutzy came up with 24.
Bell hammered 15 kills in the nightcap. Inkrott pounded 11 while Rogers tallied 10 kills and four blocks. Thompson rejected a team-high seven blocks at the net. Wagner produced eight kills and five blocks. Anderson handed out 23 assists and Bartholomew had 14. Kirkpatrick paced the back row with 27 digs.
