PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (courtesy of @UrsulineArrows) – For the second time in a span of 15 days, the Ursuline College basketball team knocked off Ohio Valley University. On Wednesday (Dec. 19), the host Arrows came away with a 67-62 victory after beating the Fighting Scots by a score of 82-64 on Dec. 4.
Shannon Sword’s team has now won three of its last four games and sits at 3-7 overall. Wednesday’s loss dropped Ohio Valley to 0-9.
UC’s latest win was a total team effort as four Arrows scored in double figures. Sophomore point guard Brianna Woods dished out nine assists and scored a season-high 17 points to lead the Ursuline offensive attack. Junior guard Katie Cappello scored 14 points and senior Laura Campbell chipped in 13 while junior Natalie Cook posted one of the better games of her career with 12 points on five of seven shooting to go with a career-high 19 rebounds.
Freshman Autumn Jones finished with seven points and senior Dee Erazo recorded four points and eight rebounds.
Ohio Valley was led by 23 points from center Jasmine Gibson. In addition to hitting 10 of her 15 attempts from the field, she led the Fighting Scots with nine boards. Janelle Silver scored 11 points while Tara Benedict and Shelby Way each added 10.
When the two teams met 15 days ago, Ursuline was a scorching 12 of 15 from three-point territory. That wasn’t the case this time around: Ursuline shot 33.3 percent (5-15) from behind the arc but was able to fall back on a solid team rebounding effort that was led by Cook. UC won the battle of the boards, 44-32.
Ursuline led by as many as 11 in the second half after a Cappello bucket put the Arrows up 56-45 with 8:06 to go. The Fighting Scots clawed their way back to get within a point at 56-55 with 4:33 left but Sword's team hung on for dear life.
It was a one possession game with six seconds left in the game but Cook ended any hope of an OVU comeback when she calmly drilled a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to grow the Ursuline lead to five points, ultimately the final margin.
