WOMEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

On Friday, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference will host its first-ever Men’s and Women’s Soccer Conference Championship Tournament games, as the 2012 Women’s Soccer Championship begins with a semifinal game between #3 seed Ursuline College and #2 seed Cedarville University, hosting by Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Ohio. Following the first semifinal match, #4 Urbana University will take on the undefeated top seed and host Trevecca Nazarene.

Women’s Championship Preview

With an undefeated regular-season, Trevecca Nazarene University (10-3-3 overall and 3-0-0 conference) earned the top seed and will face Urbana University (8-8-2, 0-2-1) in the second semifinal game on Friday, November 2. Earlier this season, TNU topped the Blue Knights at Urbana, 1-0 on a game-winning goal by Brooke Gann in the first half. Urbana out-shot the Trojans in the game, but goalkeeper Bekah Headrick made four saves for one of her nine shutouts on the season.

The win came at the beginning of a four-game stretch in which the team didn’t allow a goal, the second longest streak of the season. After an 0-2 start, TNU went the next six games, including two double overtime ties, without allowing a goal, going 4-0-2.  

For Urbana, after an 0-4 start, the Blue Knights rebounded to go 8-2-2 over its next 12 games and didn’t allow a goal in seven of those games, with one of those two losses coming to Trevecca. They outscored their opponents 21-6 in those 12 games, despite not scoring a goal themselves in three games during that streak - though in those three games they earned two double overtime scoreless ties.

Coming into the tournament, Ursuline seems to be peaking at the right time winning four straight and six of its last seven games, though Cedarville is 5-2-2 in its last nine games, including two more double overtime scoreless ties. As a conference, there has been 12 overtime contests this season and over those 12 overtime games, nine went to double overtime, and seven ended in scoreless draws.

Players to watch this weekend from each team include the conferences leading scorer Jacoby Ziegler (Cedarville), who has a G-MAC high 13 goals and 29 points. Abby Pearson (Urbana) scored six goals, but has a conference high 10 assists for 22 points to rank second. Ursuline holds three of the next four spots with Taylor MacIver’s 10 goals (second in conference) and 21 points, Vanessa Consiglio’s seven goals, four assists, and 18 points, and Paige Rowan’s six goals, two assists, and 14 points.

Brooke Gann (Trevecca Nazarene) led her team with eight goals, which is third in the conference, and 17 points, which ranks fifth in the conference.  Ziegler also leads the conference with six game-winning goals, doubling the three game-winners each by MacIver (Ursuline), Rowan (Ursuline), and Brittany Mazzu (Urbana).

In goal, TNU’s Bekah Headrick posted a 0.37 goals against average. In over 1,225 minutes she allowed only five total goals, posting nine shutouts and a .909 save percentage. With credit to her defense in front of her, she made only 50 saves, compared to 98 saves for Urbana’s Meghan Taucher, who allowed 18 goals in over 1,680 minutes, which is over five more games (90 minutes per game) than Headrick played in net.

Despite the various win totals in conference and overall, a case could be made for any of the four teams to make it to the finals and win the first-ever G-MAC Women’s Soccer Championship. Trevecca went undefeated in conference and is tied with Ursuline with 10 overall wins. In the regular-season, Trevecca topped Ursuline on a neutral field (turf) 1-0, the same field Ursuline lost to Urbana on just two days prior by a 1-0 score for both of the Arrows losses in conference. Their one win came at home on grass. The championship tournament at Trevecca will be played on grass, which could play a big factor for Ursuline who has won four straight and six of seven to close the season.

Cedarville at 1-1-1 in conference lost to Trevecca, beat Ursuline, and played a double overtime scoreless tie against Urbana. Their loss came on the road, while their win and the scoreless tie was at home. For Urbana, the Blue Knights went 0-2-1 despite only being outscored 2-0 in the three games, two on the road and one at home.

In no way did any one team dominate the others, of the six conference games played this season two of them finished 2-0, three of them finished 1-0, and one was a 0-0 tie. So to say that the team that scores first has a huge advantage is an understatement and the losing team has been shutout in all six conference games.

TNU’s Homecoming festivities are this weekend, so parking will be difficult. Arrive early to find parking and get to the facility.

No artificial noisemakers are permitted during competition. Signs, placards, or banners that are insulting, offensive, or clearly in poor taste will be removed from the event.
