NASHVILLE - Alex Hammond provided all the scoring Trevecca Nazarene University would need as the Trojans edged Lincoln Memorial University, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the TNU Soccer Complex.
Hammond fired a shot from the right side of box, after receiving a pass from Becky Bartos in the 21st minute of the first half.
The shutout victory also extends the team's streak of not allowing a goal to 599 straight minutes. The streak goes back to a 3-1 loss on September 1 - and has covered six contests since - including a double-overtime shutout against an NCAA DI Lipscomb University, as well as one other double-overtime shutout against St. Catherine College.
The Rail Splitters nearly took an early lead, when Nicole McKinney fired a shot at the goal in the fourth minute of the game, but the shot deflected hard off the right post and kept the game scoreless. McKinney would have another attempt in the 15th minute, but her shot was saved by Trojan goalkeeper Bekah Headrick.
That is when the Trojans took control over the game, scoring in the 21st minute on Hammond’s goal. TNU nearly added another goal with only 10 seconds remaining in the first half as Mackenzie Cox headed a shot that just sailed over the crossbar.
After the first half, Trevecca held a slim 8-7 advantage in shots and a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.
Trevecca would tighten up its defense in the second half as Headrick denied three shots. The Rail Splitters out-shot the Trojans 6-4, however, they were unable to get one past TNU's net-minder.
Headrick recorded her fifth shutout of the year and collected four saves. Her counterpart, LMU's Kayla Hanson denied three shots in the loss. TNU was out-shot overall by LMU, 13-12, but held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
